Day trips

From Zoagli to Genoa, Pisa and Florence

Four cities, four experiences. All easy day trips by train or car from Zoagli.

Genoa: the proud port city

Genoa (Genova)
Distance 40 km
Car ~45 min
Train ~40 min
Best full day

Genoa is Liguria’s capital and one of Italy’s most underrated cities. The old town, the Centro Storico, is the largest medieval old town in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Narrow alleys (caruggi) open into hidden squares with churches and palazzi. Christopher Columbus was born here, and the spirit of the old maritime republic is still visible.

The Genoa Aquarium at the old harbor is the biggest in Italy and the third largest in Europe. Nearby you’ll find the Galata Maritime Museum and Renzo Piano’s Biosphere. Via Garibaldi with its palaces is a must, and in the caruggi you can eat real Genoese classics: trofie al pesto, focaccia and farinata.

Tip

Visit Genoa by train. Parking is expensive and stressful. From Genova Brignole you can walk into the old town in 10 minutes. Plan half a day for the aquarium and dinner in Boccadasse, the former fishing village by the sea.

La Spezia and Cinque Terre

La Spezia
Distance 80 km
Car ~1 h
Train ~1 h
Best full day

La Spezia is the gateway to Cinque Terre and the Gulf of Poets. The city itself has a lively daily market (every day except Sunday), a pleasant pedestrian zone and great restaurants for a fair price. The waterfront is good for a stroll and the naval museum is worth a visit.

The main reason for the trip is Cinque Terre. From La Spezia Centrale, trains run every 15 minutes to the five villages. A day pass for trains and hiking trails costs around 16 euros. You can also go directly from Zoagli (about 45 minutes to Monterosso), but if you want to see all five villages, La Spezia is the best base. Porto Venere and Lerici in the Gulf of Poets are also beautiful and reachable by boat from La Spezia.

Tip

Take the train for Cinque Terre. Cars are not allowed in the villages and parking in La Spezia is easier. July and August are extremely crowded; May, June or September are best. On the way back, stop at the Brugnato Outlet right off the A12.

Pisa: more than a tower

Pisa
Distance 140 km
Car ~1.5 h
Train ~2 h
Best half to full day

The Leaning Tower is why everyone comes, and it really is impressive. But the Piazza dei Miracoli has four buildings, all worth a visit: cathedral, baptistery, Camposanto and the tower. The ensemble is UNESCO‑listed and the marble against the green lawn is a stunning sight.

Beyond the tower, Pisa has a lively university vibe with great restaurants and bars on the Lungarno. The tiny church of Santa Maria della Spina on the river is a Gothic gem. By car you can combine the visit with a beach stop in Marina di Pisa or continue to Marina di Massa.

Tip

If you want to climb the tower, book online (around 20 euros). Without a reservation you might only get late‑day slots. Park outside the center and take the shuttle to Piazza dei Miracoli. On the way back, Lucca (30 minutes from Pisa) is worth a stop.

Florence: Renaissance you can touch

Florence (Firenze)
Distance 230 km
Car ~2.5 h
Train ~3 h
Best full day, ideally 2

Florence is where the Renaissance was born. The cathedral with Brunelleschi’s dome, the Uffizi with Botticelli and Leonardo, the Ponte Vecchio, Michelangelo’s David, the Pitti Palace and the Boboli Gardens. It is a lot for one day, but a concentrated highlights tour is possible.

The trip from Zoagli is the longest, but by train you arrive without stress. The route via La Spezia and Pisa is scenic. The center of Florence is compact and largely closed to cars. For food, choose side streets away from the tourist flow: bistecca alla fiorentina, ribollita, lampredotto and, of course, gelato.

Tip

Book Uffizi and Accademia (David) tickets online or you can wait 2–3 hours. Florence pairs well with the Prada Space outlet in Montevarchi (about 50 minutes south). If you drive, beware the ZTL restricted zone: cameras capture every plate and fines start around 100 euros. Park outside the center.

At a glance

Zoagli sits perfectly between the culture cities and the coast. Genoa for a spontaneous half‑day, La Spezia and Cinque Terre for coastline and hiking, Pisa for the tower and Tuscan vibe, Florence for the full Renaissance program. All four are reachable by train, which is often easier than driving. After each day trip, you return to quiet Zoagli with the sea right in front of you.

Transport tip

In high season, trains are usually easier than driving and parking.
